Lisbeth Boholm, born in 1966, is a Swedish painter, currently living and working in Falun, Sweden. Her symbolic paintings, although not easily defined, are unique in their bold colours and imagery.
Symbolism and Mystery
Boholm’s paintings are intriguing in their originality. It is not obvious to see where she draws her inspiration from in her collage-like amalgamation of figures, form and colour. There is a definite symbolism and mystery to the works which explore sensations of longing, sorrow, intimacy and solitude. There is an almost utopian state of mutual understanding between the humans and animals that are the subjects of her canvas.
Contrasting Colours
Boholm works with oil on canvas and a bold and vibrant colour palette, that is Swedish inspired, with an emphasis on blues and yellows. The contrasting colours, repetitive lines and dots are reminiscent of Folk Art. The pieces are a process of reworking. She paints over the image again and again, keeping some parts unchanged so that the traces and narrative of the process of creation remain.
Exhibitions
Boholm has presented her work in exhibitions all over Sweden, at institutions such as Gallery Jan Wallmark in Stockholm and the Rättvik Art Hall. She has been the recipient of a number of scholarships and grants since 1995.
